In those times traveling, which was either by foot or
horseback, was treacherous, and tiresome. The Monehege
Path, now within the Town of Marlborough, was the major
trade link between New London and Hartford. John Sadler's
"Ordinary" was erected in a large open meadow near Lake
Terramuggus to offer refreshments to weary travelers. Beer,
biscuits and cheese were set out for patrons who merely
stopped to refresh themselves along the way. Travelers
who spent a few days or the night were treated to more
substantial dinners, like pork and corn, with venison and
bear meat occasionally brought in by the Indians. Summer
provided fresh vegetables from Sadler's own garden, beer
made from his own hops and cider from the nearby orchards.
Sadler's has always been a place of relaxation, good food
and good times. We proudly carry on that tradition of
hospitality and an updated version of good country cooking.
We'll send you on your way with appetites satisfied and
spirits brightened.
